Too few people are utilising their computer security knowledge to safeguard their IT systems from malevolent online forces, according to Sophos.
The firm, which specialises in protecting business networks, said that although many people are now aware of the risks they face, they are simply not taking the necessary measures.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for the company, said web users need to ensure their anti-virus software is constantly updated and that they exercise caution when visiting lesser-known websites.
Mr Cluley said: "They hopefully are aware of it (security issues) but not enough of them are doing it. The fundamental thing is to run an anti-virus programme and keep it up-to-date - and I mean really up-to-date."
He added web users also need to ensure downloads are coming from safe websites as otherwise there is a greater risk of viral infection.
Web users could choose to take a programming course to gain a better understanding of the issue.
During 2008, organised criminals tripled the number of cyber attacks designed to infect home computers, according to a recent Sophos report.
