Technology training focus for US schools

American teachers are being given extra IT training in a bid to increase the technology skills of pupils in the country.

The Hattiesburg American reports that education chiefs in the region are continuing to invest heavily in IT and technology training for teachers, with growing signs that the IT industry is going to be a major employer in the aftermath of the recession.

As a result, there is a keen focus in the US and other countries on the quality of IT training provided to students so that they have the qualifications to fill a potential skills gap, as the number of jobs in the IT industry increases.

In the UK, a similar approach is being taken with a government-backed report concluding earlier this year that IT skills should be put alongside reading, writing and arithmetic in primary schools as a vital part of early years learning.

Meanwhile, the British Educational Suppliers Association has called for better IT training of teachers after its research found many are not confident using technology in the classroom.
