Dr Hilary Jones, a health and medical advisor for morning show GMTV and a practising GP, is supporting a scheme to encourage over-50s to get online.
A third of people over the age of 50, including Dr Jones, do not use the internet, so GMTV has partnered with the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (Niace) to encourage more over-50s to give it a try and reap the benefits.
Dr Jones often falls back on colleagues and associates to do any work that requires a computer, partly because he prefers to spend more time with patients.
He said: "Not feeling comfortable using computers means I am dependent on my secretary to decipher my handwriting, because I cannot use a computer."
He added that he was looking forward to learning how to access good internet content and computer filing shortcuts.
Niace advises inexperienced people to recruit a trusted friend to help them through computer training.
According to IT skill organisation e-skills, nearly 80 per cent of professional IT staff have turned down opportunities for further computer training opportunities in recent weeks, as more people are opting to stay in their current jobs during the recession.
