Students teach silver surfers skills

A collection of sixth-formers have been showing a group of pensioners the way on the internet.

Thisissomerset.co.uk reports the sixth form pupils from Clevedon Community School were able to share their IT training with the 12 men and women from the Hawthorns Clevedon retirement village.

Aged between 70 and 90-years-old, the "silver surfers" - as they are nicknamed - learnt how to browse the internet and create their own email account.

The school's community project coordinator Tamsin Chambers, who developed the idea, said: "We were all so impressed by the residents' enthusiasm and eagerness to learn."

More IT training sessions have already been planned for the future.

Manager of Hawthorns, Marie Marshall, said: "IT is one of a wide range of activities that we offer and we actively encourage our residents to take up as many new things as they can."

At the beginning of June, the Henley Standard also reported that pupils from a local school were helping silver surfers with their IT skills as part of Adult Learners' Week.
