Completing a university-level course at a further education college may be a solution for students who feel overwhelmed by bigger institutions.
Distance learning from home can be another way to get tailored, one-to-one help with courses.
The Independent reports that many school leavers are turning to smaller institutions to get the most from their classes, such as computer courses.
Clare Mannall, a curriculum team leader at Westminster Kingsway College, said many young people "prefer the idea of a smaller institution with smaller class sizes, where they can get to know each other better and where we can build up a personal and supportive relationship with them".
As with home study, college courses can also offer students flexibility for when they want to study, reports the newspaper.
Institutions like Sheffield College even offer on-site creches so parents will find it easier to get to class.
Last week, it was announced the new University of the Heads of the Valleys will be offering 80 distance-learning places when it opens this September.
