Enhanced skills training could help to tackle unemployment rates in Scotland, according to a trade union leader.
Speaking to the BBC, Graham Smith - the general secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) - said that a number of measures would be required to combat growing joblessness.
He argues actions that could be taken by the Scottish government include increased training support and short-term wage subsidies.
The general secretary continued that "the STUC believes that strong action is required at Scottish, UK and G20 level to address the deteriorating economy and labour market".
Mr Smith's comments follow data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) that reveals employment trends across Scotland. It is estimated that there were 3,000 more people unemployed by the end 2008 than at the beginning.
Also commenting on the figures, first minster Alex Salmond said the country's government "remains resolute on combating recession and building a strong recovery for the Scottish economy".
