Skills minister: Apprenticeship scheme will boost UK skills

17:00 26th February 2009

A new apprenticeship scheme launched by the government will help to boost skills in the British workforce, according to Lord Young.

The skills minister said that the UK economy will be in desperate need of skilled employees when it emerges from the current recession and the scheme would help to provide those workers.

He added that employees will benefit by gaining skills that can be transferred to a wide range of work environments while businesses will add a skilled worker to their ranks.

Lord Young said: "We are talking about career opportunities for both young people and adults and it's about making a bigger contribution to improving the skill base of the UK."

People enrolling on a new apprenticeship may be inspired to further improve their skills by taking IT courses or computer training.

The Learning and Skills Council recently found that 20 per cent of businesses surveyed are taking on more apprentices, while nearly three-quarters considered that training costs were reduced by accepting apprentices.
