Scientists are using Google to help gather vital information on the swine flu virus.
The researchers are hoping that by using collaborative toll Google Knol they can collect and disseminate updates on the virus.
The Public Library of Science (PloS) has launched its PloS Currents:Influenza website and together with Google Knol and a new independent database called Rapid Research Notes, it hopes to make new research freely available.
In order to maintain the academic integrity of the published work, PloS has said: "All content is moderated by an expert group of influenza researchers."
It is increasingly possible to use open-source software when working in programming careers rather than rely on packaged software.
According to ITPro, cheap initial outlay, flexible support costs and potential security benefits are all good reasons to consider open-sourced software.
