Within ten to 15 years schools will be using computerised tests, says an expert.
Instead of the traditional exam hall, students could be evaluated continuously online, according to assessment agency Cambridge Assessment's chief executive Simon Lebus.
The development could help students that find current methods stressful but will demand pupils have the appropriate computer skills.
For younger people using computers and the internet may be second nature, but for older people who received no formal computer lessons IT courses are often needed to help them develop skills.
Such is the influence of computing in the classroom that most schools and colleges have an online resource that teachers and students can access.
Moodle, an online course management programme, helps people teaching in the UK to organise their resources.
The resource is free to use and can help teachers organise online learning sites.
