Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are not aware of the difference between certain technologies and this could lead to some wasting thousands of pounds every year, it has been claimed.
Better IT training could be needed among SMEs to help them more fully understand the different types of products available to them from the IT industry.
Nigel Davey, business development manager at Managed Networks, believes that many SMEs are mistaking virtualisation for hosted IT because they do not know enough about the IT industry to recognise the differences.
He explained that many companies perceive virtualisation as their server infrastructure being outsourced.
"Because it is somewhere else they perceive it as a virtual server or virtual server infrastructure even though, in reality, it is actually hosted," commented Mr Davey.
A recent report from Managed Networks revealed an online search to discover the difference between virtualisation and hosted IT provides over 20 variations and definitions, meaning it is little surprise that many non-technical people at SMEs are confused by the terms.
