Online payment service PayPal has noted that consumers are now more likely to go online to look for a bargain and advised smaller companies to get themselves a website.
According to the firm, which helps buyers and sellers exchange cash across the web, companies that ignore e-commerce are denying themselves vast amounts of potential income.
PayPal says UK retailers could be generating up to £235 billion more and increasing their turnover by an average of 37 per cent.
Cameron McLean, PayPal's general manager for UK merchant services says not having a website is like leaving your shop closed "or refusing to tell customers anything about the services you provide".
"We know that consumers are looking to the internet more and more in the current climate, to search out bargains and fully research which businesses they are going to use."
The most recent research from analyst comScore has revealed that Google is the most popular search engine of choice attracting 64 per cent of US users' search enquiries.
