People seeking to improve their job prospects during the tough economic climate may be able to improve their chances by carrying out part-time work in a related field, it has been claimed.

Whether seeking a career change or simply looking to gain a first full-time position, undertaking part-time work could help an individual develop a range of skills that will help them in their new career.

That is the opinion of Paul Redmond, head of careers and employability at the University of Liverpool and vice-president of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services.

He explained: "Part-time jobs can often be a fantastic insight into graduate jobs."

A growing number of people may be looking to move into IT careers over the coming months, as it is anticipated the IT industry will see a wealth of new employment opportunities.

A recent report from IT giant Microsoft has predicted the IT industry will lead the world out of the recent economic slump and deliver new job opportunities as the sector drives the global recovery.
