'PC sales on the way back up'

Sales of PCs are recovering, according to new data from research consultancy Context.

The organisation says that distribution into eight European economies increased by 4.2 per cent in July, MicroScope.co.uk has reported.

Distributors observed that notebook sales accounted for nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) of PC units sold.

Sales of notebooks were down 11.8 per cent compared with figures from July 2008, although mini-notebooks are proving increasingly popular. MicroScope.co.uk reports Context found they accounted for 24.3 per cent of all notebook sales through distributors.

Students on networking courses who are looking to retrain may be seeing more of these small portable computers - sometimes classified as netbooks - and cheaper models appearing on desks in colleges.

Advances in technology are allowing netbook makers to install modems into these diminutive machines. Hewlett-Packard has recently announced it is to offer its netbooks to buyers in Japan without them needing to sign up to phone contracts, Business Week has reported.

The researchers reported sales of laptops that cost less than $400 (£240) "increased significantly" and accounted for nearly half (47.2 per cent) of sales last month.
