A new online initiative has been launched to promote the role of women in the IT industry.
Entitled "Doing IT around the world", the online scheme follows the lives and careers of women in technology jobs across every continent including Antarctica through an online diary and photo album format.
The women were chosen from a wide range of ages, industries and technology areas; from a communications technology officer in Antarctica to the director of a sub-Saharan ICT provider.
The aim of the scheme is to address the declining numbers of women taking up technology studies and leaving the IT industry, by offering real-life examples of IT career paths.
Sonja Bernhardt, founder of the site, explained that the initiative features women from a broad definition of IT.
She said: "We don't just mean traditional information technology; we mean innovation technologies; bio-informatics, science technology and also people that are into new media like blogs and digital video."
Last week, figures revealed that global demand for IT is growing, despite the current economic turbulence.
