Computer training is being provided to thousands of North Yorkshire pensioners following the roll-out of new facilities in libraries across the region, reports the Press.
Internet service provider NYnet, based in Boroughbridge, has established high-speed internet connections in more than 40 libraries and training courses will be provided under the myguide scheme, which has launched to coincide with Digital Unite's Silver Surfers' Day.
Around ten million older people lack rudimentary computer skills and so the resources have been provided to cater for the needs of the growing numbers of pensioners in the region.
David Cullen, NYnet chief executive, told the paper: "Digital inclusion is a key priority for the government over the next three years and through partnerships with organisations such as UK online centres, NYnet will increasingly be at the forefront in opening up access to digital technologies."
He added that the development forms an attempt to enable local residents to benefit from the service, as well as regional business parks.
The Silver Surfers' scheme has also proven popular in sheltered housing courts in Southampton as well, according to the Southern Daily Echo.
