The founder of Netscape, Marc Andreessen, is in the process of developing a new internet browser.
The New York Times reports that people close to his investment in the project say he is bringing in colleagues to help him build the web tool.
Now backing a start-up company called RockMelt, Mr Andreessen and executives at the new firm have kept their comments about the project to a minimum.
Co-founder Eric Vishria said the project was in the first stages of development: "Talking about it at this stage is not useful," reports the New York Times.
Netscape was one of the first successful internet browsers, devised to give people the tools they needed to search and navigate around the internet.
It became less popular thanks to Microsoft's product, Internet Explorer, which was widely adopted.
Students on web design courses may also be familiar with more recent browsers, such as Firefox and Safari.
