Women are in a better position to start their own business now than they ever have been before, according to everywoman.
The company, which provides training and resources for businesswomen, said that women now have very strong skill sets and have many more options when it comes to a potential career change.
Karen Gill, director of everywoman, said there is now more professional support for women setting out to make it on their own in the business world.
Ms Gill said: "When job security is at risk, many people look to enterprise and self-employment, and as women are more skilled than ever before, starting up their own business is a more viable option."
Greater availability of IT training and additional courses has been beneficial for women as well as their male counterparts.
There were nearly ten per cent more businesses started in the UK by women during 2008 than there were in 2007, according to figures from Barclays, with over 90,000 start-ups registered.
