While many students may well regularly use the internet, in some instances for distance learning, the way that they connect to the web should be considered.
Jon Ingram, operations director of broadbandchoices.co.uk noted that students may well find that a mobile internet connection suits them better than a fixed line alternative.
He argued that currently, students tend to consider a mobile internet connection as an additional service rather than a replacement for home broadband.
"It's worth considering instead of a fixed line because you're not then having to argue about sharing usage and so on with housemates," Mr Ingram said, adding that it can give extra flexibility.
Performance from mobile internet connections is continuing to improve as well, he said, noting that reliability is getting better.
His comments follow research released by broadbandchoices.co.uk which found that many students now tend to see a broadband connection as a necessity rather than a convenience.
