In a bid to encourage more people to learn about the internet, Martha Lane Fox, the government's digital champion, has highlighted the savings available online.
Writing for the Mirror, Ms Lane Fox said the poorest families in Britain could access savings of £300 a year by learning to use the internet, while the figure can be as high as £565 for families on an average income.
She highlights that ten million people remain offline in the UK, 40 per cent of whom are Britain's most vulnerable citizens, and her intention is to tackle this issue.
Ms Lane Fox wrote in the paper: "We want to reach out to the long-term unemployed, families with children and the over-65s who we have identified as being the worst affected."
As well as accessing significant savings, pursuing computer training skills and learning to use the internet can enable people to find higher-paid jobs.
Nearly one million people are currently having to work part-time jobs in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics, but these people have the opportunity to keep their computer skills up to date.
