A majority of business leaders believe education standards in the UK have declined in recent years, according to a study from IMC Learning.
The company, which specialises in providing advanced content solutions and elearning, also found that nearly 80 per cent of businesses see school-leavers lacking basic skill-sets.
More than 20 per cent of over 100 business leaders surveyed said that applicants lack the necessary computer training and IT skills for the jobs they apply for.
Gareth Walters, sales and marketing director at IMC (UK) Learning, said: "Now more than ever it is important for organisations to provide an effective training programme to bring new employees up to speed in core areas."
He added many different training options are available that will benefit both employers and their staff, while having a minimal impact on a company's output.
The Huddersfield Daily Examiner recently reported that the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce has called for more government funding to provide corporate training during the recession.
