Libraries across the UK are providing computer training environments for local people looking to improve their skills, reports the Guardian.
Many people lack basic computer skills but the recession, combined with the more informal library environment, is increasing the demand for free IT training.
Lifelong Learning UK is one organisation which is involved with making sure that libraries, and indeed librarians, have the resources and knowledge to enable people to seek the experience they need.
Michelle Creed, LLUK director for Wales, told the paper: "Libraries have a pivotal role that isn't always fully recognised. They play an essential role in our basic skills agenda and lifelong learning."
Enrolling on computer training courses can help people who have lost their jobs to develop new skills and re-enter a workforce that revolves around computer use.
Librarians can also take an ICT diploma that makes them more able to provide support to local residents who seek computer access.
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that the vast majority of home web users now have a broadband connection.
