Jobseekers should be wary of what they put on web

People planning a career change may want to consider taking an IT course so that they are fully aware of the dangers posed by the internet, it has been suggested.

Although the internet can offer a wealth of opportunities for people considering a career change, if an individual does not know what they are doing they could end up putting themselves at a disadvantage in the jobs market.

The Recruitment Society has warned jobseekers that anything the post on the internet could come back to haunt them at a later date.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said: "You should be very careful what sort of online footprint you leave."

He continued: "Anything you put online can stay there for 20-30 years....you've got to be prepared for anything you've put online to follow you around."

Taking an IT course could ensure a person understands how to properly use the internet so that it can benefit them, rather than become a potential millstone around their neck.

A recent survey released by talent management consultancy DDI has suggested that employers in the UK are less likely to check candidates' social networking sites than in other major countries, but the trend is becoming more popular.
