Steve Jobs, chief executive officer of Apple, is back at work and helping develop the company's response to the new generation of netbook computers.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the enigmatic Jobs is now closely involved with the development of a small touch-screen product.
Citing people familiar with the situation, the paper reports Mr Jobs is paying particular attention to the product's advertising and marketing strategy.
Students on programming courses who prefer Apple Macintosh laptops can already buy the company's MacBook Air - an ultra-light notebook.
Rather than reduce screen size, the firm removed optical drives and enclosed this product in aluminum to keep its weight to a minimum.
It has been reported that the new Apple - should it come to market - will be a touch-screen tablet PC, rather than the now common mini-notebook/netbook type.
Jobs' health has been the focus of attention for several months and the US computer firm - best known for its iPods - has been reluctant to officially announce any venture into the netbook market.
