Jobless figure hits 2.4 million
17:32 15th July 2009
The total people out of work in the UK has risen to 2.4 million, up 281,000 in three months.
Those claiming Job Seekers Allowance has also risen, in June 23,000 more people began claiming for the handout.
Unions are dismayed at the figures, which revealed youth unemployment hit a 16-year-high while the working population contracted by 269,000.
Faced with more challenging employment conditions people recently made redundant should consider developing new skills, perhaps even enrol in web design courses and look for a change of career.
Despite disappointing figures from across the UK there was one ray of hope - the Office for National Statistics figures have revealed that unemployment in Wales fell by 1,000 in the last three months.
