The Irish government is hoping new investment in the digital industries will develop new jobs and bring the country out of recession.
By proposing six new plans for government and infrastructure, development energy and communications minister Eamon Ryan believes 30,000 new jobs could be created in the next five to ten years.
"While there is a correct focus on the amount we need to save and the spending we must curtail; we must also plan for the jobs of the future. We need to stimulate the economy as well in order for recovery to occur," the minister explained.
The six government actions include building an Exemplar Smart Communications Network to increase connection speeds, developing energy-efficient data centres and cloud computing and establishing an International Content Services Centre (ICSC) to build on digital skills.
The ICSC will harness the digital creative arts and will need people who have completed networking and web design courses as well as those with experience of modern communications technology.
Ireland's drive to create digital jobs shows how seriously governments are taking the digital economy - if you are hoping to retrain then an IT course could help prepare you for future employment.
In related news, the country's first dedicated search engine agency, FirstFound, is about to open for business, the Irish Independent has reported.
