Having access to the internet is akin to having another teacher for many students and pupils.
That is the opinion of Ray Barker, director of the British Educational Suppliers Association - the body which organises BETT, the world's largest technology in education event.
Whether it be for distance learning courses or for children researching for homework projects, Mr Barker believes the world wide web has opened up a host of educational opportunities for society.
"The arrival of the internet into everyone's lives has introduced another teacher resource into the learning environment," he claimed.
Mr Barker's comments follow an Ofcom study which found that a large majority of children are confident in using the internet - with 94 per cent claiming they can always find the information they need.
It was also revealed that older children are the most likely to learn about digital technology at school.
