Improved IT training urged to help young people

14:35 8th October 2009

The number of British students taking IT training at university has dropped by 60 per cent since 2000, despite the demand for people in the IT industry increasing.

According to the Independent, the figures demonstrate a problem in the UK education system and suggest that more should be done to provide young people with IT training that will enhance their chances of going into an IT career later in life.

The statistics also show that the majority of IT industry roles now go to graduates from overseas rather than British-based graduates, suggesting improvements in the IT training sector in the UK are needed.

Such improvements would enable more young people from Britain to take up employment in the IT industry, which could help boost the economy at a time when unemployment among the young is rising dramatically.

A recent survey carried out by analyst company IDC, on behalf of Microsoft, revealed that the global IT industry could contribute 5.8 million jobs over the next four years, helping to take the world out of recession.
