Further IT training for staff is essential if businesses want to ensure their online security, according to a leading expert.
IT security provider Sophos has commented on the significance of companies training their staff in secure computer use in order to tackle malware deployed by cyber criminals.
Research released by Panda Security last week showed that one-third of all the computer viruses currently in existence were created in the first ten months of 2010.
According to the online security company, programmers created 20 million new types of malware in this period, the same amount as in the whole of 2009.
"The problem is generally a lot worse than it was a few years ago," senior technology consultant for Sophos Graham Cluley confirmed.
For businesses looking to protect their data, Mr Cluley said that "it goes beyond just buying more software. You need the tools, but you also need to train your staff and educate them as to how to use computers safely".
Security firm BitDefender said last week that one-fifth of Facebook users are exposed to malware that is present in their personal news feed on the social network.
