New research has revealed that a growing number of hackers and viruses are being successful in their attempts to compromise computers because users are not taking proper precautions.

A greater awareness of the threat of computer attacks is needed, with IT training one way to provide people with the information and understanding they need to reduce the likelihood of their computer being compromised in an attack.

Online information firm Garlik has warned that cybercrime is on the increase in the UK because users are becoming slack about their security measures.

Company chief executive Tom Ilube, explained fraudsters are "having it pretty easy at the moment," because as they are using increasingly advanced techniques, while "consumers are becoming more complacent".

Providing IT training could be one way for a company to reduce the risk of staff allowing hackers to access sensitive information through a computer attack.

The quarterly Anti-Phishing Working Group's phishing activity trends report, published at the end of September, revealed the number of banking trojan/password stealing crimeware infections detected increased by more than 186 per cent between the fourth quarter of 2008 and the second quarter of 2009.
