IT training could be used to reduce the risk of more people being duped into downloading dangerous software onto their machines, it has been suggested.
According to internet security experts Symantec, a growing number of people are being fooled into downloading so-called scareware, which sees malicious software masquerading as anti-virus technology.
Over 40 million people have been afflicted with some form of scareware scam over the past year alone, the company has said.
Jens Kirschner, training manager for computer forensics at IT consultancy 7Safe, suggested better awareness of the threat is needed and one way to achieve this might be though improved IT training.
He explained the best way for people to avoid such scams is to have "a level of preparation on the malware scanning front and also having a safe level of mistrust about what you find on the internet".
A recent report from PandaLabs revealed that malware is on the rise, with perpetrators increasingly using social networking to target individuals and companies alike.
