IT training needed as UK consumers struggle with jargon

A new survey has suggested the UK needs to provide greater IT training for people because many are baffled by jargon.

According to research from internet provider Virgin Media, 18 per cent of those polled do not know what the term 'broadband' means, while 40 per cent of internet users are not aware of what a web browser is.

The results demonstrate the need for businesses and individuals to seek out and develop IT training so that people have a basic understanding of modern technology and are able to work and live without being confused or concerned by the advancements.

"It's great to see that Brits have a thirst for getting online but there is still scope to improve their broadband experience," said Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media.

IT training will become increasingly important as the government rolls out its plans to ensure all homes and businesses in the UK have access to high-speed broadband connection.

Chancellor Alistair Darling recently confirmed proposals to deliver broadband services across the UK by 2012, but critics have warned the scheme could cost billions to implement.
