The government must do more to highlight the different routes that young people can take when leaving school, it has been suggested.
Thinktank Civitas has suggested that university is currently being pushed as almost the only option for young people, but the government needs to focus more carefully on other routes, such as IT training and apprenticeships, to help more young people secure employment.
"It is something that has been a failure under this government, [to] enable, or ensure that young people are going in to work if they are not going in to further education," said Anastasia de Waal, head of family and education at Civitas.
IT training courses could help young people develop a career in IT, becoming a database administrator or programmer.
Recent government figures have shown that the recession has hit young people particularly hard, as school leavers struggle to find employment because employers are looking for people with greater experience to help them through the tough economic climate.
The government has committed to developing more apprenticeship schemes and placements across the country.
