Seeking computer training could help a greater number of web users to surf the internet with a more thorough awareness of the risks of online activity.
Research from the Get Safe Online Report 2009 suggests 33 per cent of web users now use different passwords depending on the online application they use, which is a two per cent increase on 2007 figures.
In addition, nearly ten per cent more people are using the internet for shopping than in 2007, while almost ten per cent fewer people are opening attachments sent to them on emails from people or organisations they do not know.
Garreth Griffith, head of UK risk management at PayPal, said: "People are protecting themselves more, protecting their machines more [and are] more likely to behave safer on the internet. But I think there is a long way to go."
The figures suggest awareness and knowledge is improving, but regular computer training can help keep in touch with new industry developments.
There has been a 13 per cent rise in the number of people using internet banking facilities since 2007, the research suggests.
