The Conservatives would overhaul the current education system and could introduce 1950s-style technical colleges if they are returned to power at the next election.
Shadow schools secretary Michael Gove has revealed the party would look at resurrecting technical schools, which would seek to provide specific training for a new generation of builders, engineers and technicians.
The move could also include a greater focus on IT training at these schools, as part of a plan to increase vocational skills and develop more apprenticeships.
Speaking at the Conservative party conference, Mr Gove explained: "Our new technical schools will provide credible, high-quality vocational education in each major city."
He said the measures would help deal with rising levels of youth unemployment in the UK caused by the recession.
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that the unemployment rate is continuing to rise, with young people most affected by the problem.
