The lack of trained IT security professionals is a global problem, according to the president of EMC's security division, Computer Weekly has reported.
The head of RSA, Art Coviello, claimed that there are not enough adequately trained IT security personnel in either the vendor community, or the public and private sectors.
In addition, the IT certification organisations ISC2, revealed that there is a particularly critical shortage of IT professionals with skills in security with business application software.
Mr Coviello said: "It is a big problem. Security consultants are at a premium."
As a solution, RSA security solutions is lobbying governments around the world to promote the education of information security, while the firm also recommended subsiding research on the subject.
In October, a poll by the communications firm Cisco revealed that employees are continuing to practice behaviours that put company data at risk.
