IT sector still offering employment opportunities

12:39 30th January 2009

Despite the current economic turmoil gripping the country, the IT sector still offers a range of employment opportunities, according to the British Computer Society (BCS).

Unemployment may be on the rise, but people who pursue regular computer training in specialist areas could find that work is easier to come by if they are made unemployed or are simply in need of additional work.

The free motivational event W Tech 2009 will be held at Savoy Place in London on 3rd February and is specifically aimed at women who may be considering a career change or who are thinking about perhaps pursuing programming courses with a view to entering the IT sector.

Rebecca George, chair of the BCS Women's Forum, said: "The sorts of positions that tend to be available are support or system maintenance roles, software design or development and specific IT management jobs."

Ms George added that the full effects of the recession are not yet known but opportunities nevertheless remain.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there was a six per cent fall in the number of women employed in the IT sector between 2001 and 2007.
