Prospective technology employees should approach their online activity as part of a public relations campaign, a leading IT recruiter has advised.
Katherine Spencer Lee, writing for computerworld.com, warned IT job-hunters that the rise of online networking sites has meant that recruitment mangers often perform internet searches on job candidates.
Ms Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, recommends that IT professionals looking for work should begin their 'PR campaign' by performing an Internet search for their name. She advised that if negative content is found it can be removed by contacting a site's webmaster.
"Controlling your online image doesn't mean blotting out any evidence of individuality or creativity," Ms Lee wrote.
"But as more and more companies turn to the web to learn about their potential hires, it makes sense to control what information they may find," she added.
Robert Half Technology has more than 100 locations worldwide and offers online IT job searches.
