While students on home learning courses may not have to make the daily trip to the lecture hall or classroom, there is still a certain amount of interaction that needs to take place.
Trent E Gabert, associate dean of the College of Liberal Studies at the University of Oklahoma, told the New York Times that many home learning courses include online discussion boards which students can use to communicate with fellow learners and tutors.
"All of these interactions are about the dialogue," he told the newspaper.
"When people communicate and work together, they learn."
All of Computeach's IT courses are offered as home learning, allowing learners to achieve their goals at a time and place that suits them.
Experts and fellow students are at hand to ensure that there is someone at hand to provide advice and support.
