Green course created for IT

11:28 17th June 2009

A new green IT qualification has been created to help businesses save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

The green IT training has been developed jointly by the British Computer Society (BCS) and training company QA.

Jeff Payne, QA's director of professional best practice, said the qualification was more than a way to helping businesses become environmentally friendly.

He said: "Organisations need to also significantly reduce their running costs, be ready to meet carbon emission and energy reduction targets and fend off the bad publicity ... from not being environmentally responsible."

Mr Payne gave an example that, according to VMware, energy consumption levels can be reduced by 80 per cent by adopting virtualisation.

Michiel van der Voort, BCS international director, said he felt confident that students who completed the IT training would be able to help businesses develop a strategy to meet green needs.

BCS is the qualifying body for Chartered IT Professionals.
