Greater flexibility facilitated by remote working opportunities

15:45 30th January 2009

The British Computer Society (BCS) said that developments in remote working technology coupled with corporate flexibility enable more people to work from home.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of women employed in the computer industry fell by over five per cent between 2001 and 2007, but the BCS said that home-working opportunities are working in women's favour.

Rapid improvements in technology have enabled people to recreate an effective office environment in their home, something which has led to many choosing a career change to the IT sector, especially among women.

Rebecca George, chair of the BCS Women's Forum, said: "These days a lot of organisations make it possible to work from home which gives people a bit more flexibility and autonomy in their job."

London's Savoy Place will play host to the free W Tech 2009 on February 3rd which provides support for women considering improving their computer skills or pursuing a career change.

Data from e-skills UK shows that women in the IT sector are paid, on average, £4,160 more each year than employees in other industries.
