Greater IT training urged to boost internet access

Efforts to increase the number of people working in the IT industry could require greater access to IT training following the findings of the government's digital inclusion champion.

Martha Lane Fox has claimed that there are over ten million people living in Britain who have never used the internet, meaning that improved access to IT training could be necessary to boost the economy over the coming years.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Ms Lane Fox's report - carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers - suggested that 1.8 million children living in so-called digitally excluded families could help boost their lifetime income by a combined £10.8 billion if they are given access to IT training and the ability to use the internet on a regular basis.

"By being online there are massive savings for people personally, rich rewards for their career prospects and also big savings for the government," she told the newspaper.

The findings appear to underline a recent study carried out on behalf of computing giant Microsoft, which suggested the IT industry would play a crucial role in helping the global economic recovery, creating hundreds of new job opportunities around the globe.
