University leavers should not assume that by taking an internship they will be putting themselves in a better position to secure a job.
Chris Morrall, managing director of change and coaching expert Talent Transitions, acknowledged internships could be of use but only as part of a structured plan to increase skills.
Mr Morrall advised graduates to keep checking recruiters' pages. He also told them to make sure that they have "the skills that are now being asked for" and advised them to enhance and add value to their CV.
According to Birmingham University's Centre for Research into Quality, graduates are expected to show they are adaptive, adaptable and transformative.
By first fitting in to established procedures before adding their own knowledge and skills, they can later help change companies and look to the future, says the centre.
IT training helps individuals learn the skills needed to fit into a modern business environment.
