Government urged to boost IT training

The government has been urged to increase its investment in IT training because millions of Britons are currently unable to take advantage of online opportunities due to a lack of skills.

According to a recent survey carried out by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, four out of five people in Britain are unable to use the information now available through technology because they do not have the necessary IT training or skills.

A spokeswoman for the organisation explained that it was not simply a matter of rolling out broadband services to more people, but requires the government to educate people in how to use IT services that are available to them.

"Even if people are able to access the internet, for example, if they do not know how to keep their personal data safe and are unaware of the resources available to them, then they may still fail to get the most from the experience," she said.

Meanwhile, voluntary company Working Links has pointed out that developing a high standard of skills is an important "enabler" in finding employment.

That suggests helping more people boost their knowledge of technology through greater IT training could improve the UK's employment situation.
