The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has told the government it must do more to establish new sources of employment.
Thanks to British industry entering a transitional period, new sources of growth need to be established to help the country out of recession.
"As a nation we can no longer rely on banking, retail and the public sector to create the jobs we need," commented report co-author Rachel Reeves.
According to the IPPR high-tech manufacturing, knowledge industries and pharmaceuticals are all ready to become profitable.
What is needed is additional investment in these areas and the creative industries to help the country get back to work.

Ms Reeves said recovery is possible "but only with the right combination of entrepreneurship and government action".
