Football club encourages IT training

Football club Reading has launched a new programme designed to encourage young people to improve their IT skills.

The Championship club has unveiled a six to ten-week course for young people that is aimed at helping them improve core skills through football-themed tasks, including an IT training course.

The Playing for Success initiative includes writing match reports and calculating percentages using league tables and attendance figures.

"Using football as a starting point for educational activities allows us to engage the children's enthusiasm and to deliver curriculum materials in an entirely different way," said Jenny Jones, Reading FC study support centre manager.

Encouraging young people to get involved in IT training at an early age can help boost the number of students taking IT courses later in life and moving into the industry in the future.

However, a recent study from the British Educational Suppliers Association has warned that teachers need to be given extra IT training to ensure they have the confidence to provide young people with effective lessons using computers.
