Young people face a range of challenges during the recession, but while depression may affect some people, others will be able to battle through, according to Depression Alliance.
With months of economic downturn having officially become a recession, many young people are having trouble finding work as government figures show that the number of unemployed in the UK has risen to nearly two million.
Many young people will be susceptible to depression given the lack of jobs currently available on the market, and the alliance says that an awareness of the symptoms is necessary.
A spokeswoman for Depression Alliance said: "The regular symptoms that people need to look out for are the disruption of sleep. That can be people sleeping too long or not enough, as well as disruption in regular eating habits."
Taking IT training and web design courses could help young people develop their skill set and stand out from the job-hunting crowd during the recession.
The GfK Nop Consumer Confidence Index shows that confidence in this year's economy has fallen by seven points.
