Sunderland City Council is urging local people to apply for free IT training vouchers worth a total of £10 million, it has been reported.
According to Lynn News, the vouchers are being provided through the Microsoft Britain Works Challenge, which aims to reduce unemployment and boost computer training provision.
The free training initiative is open to anyone who lives or works in the Sunderland region and was launched last week (May 24th) by councillor Dave Allan.
Mr Allan commented that almost 80 per cent of advertised jobs now call for IT training.
"We want to make sure everyone can use these vouchers to access training and upskill to compete in the jobs market and find employment," the councillor told Lynn News.
Microsoft's Britain Works Challenge aims to get 500,000 people back into employment by 2013 through the use of digital technologies.
Similar schemes are also set to take place in Barnsley and Milton Keynes.
