Computer training workshop marks 25 years

18:51 24th April 2009

A workshop in Cardiff that provides computer training facilities and other resources to young single mums and pregnant teenagers has marked its 25th year.

Women's Workshop has spent the past quarter-century providing young mums with parenting skills advice, while also giving them access to skills courses such as computer training to help them find a job, reports Wales Online.

Crucially, the workshop also provides free childcare, enabling mums to take full advantage of the resources on offer at flexible times.

Jane Hutt, the current education minister, helped establish the workshop in 1984 when she was a county councillor in South Glamorgan and she told the website: "It supports women through high-quality training and equips them with the skills and confidence to enter employment or further training."

Marking the workshop's anniversary, current trainees are putting together a DVD to discuss what it is like to be a young mum.

In his Budget report, the chancellor has announced a new scheme guaranteeing a job or training to young adults who have been unemployed for a year or more.
