Opportunities to pursue computer training have proven popular at a series of sheltered housing courts in Southampton, reports the Southern Daily Echo.
Seven courts in the city have been equipped with computer facilities and internet connections, with residents able to learn how to use them through 12-week IT training courses, while the plan is to extend the Silver Surfers' scheme throughout Southampton.
Southampton city council set up the scheme to help introduce any local residents over the age of 55 to the benefits of the internet, such as shopping and email.
Debbie Cotton, the scheme's organiser, told the paper: "Not everyone was sure about the computers when they were first set up, but as word goes around people's curiosity outweighs their wariness and they often become keen to see what's on offer."
Many locals have now developed regular communication with relatives across the world, while some have even been convinced to buy their own computer equipment.
The Telegraph recently reported that 104-year-old Bradford resident Ivy Bean has become the oldest known user of Twitter.com.
