Computer training in schools across the UK needs to be improved to ensure pupils are learning new skills, according to a report.
The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) found that too many pupils are merely demonstrating their existing skills in information and computer technology (ICT) classes, rather than learning new ones.
While ICT teaching in primary schools was found to have improved, less than 50 per cent of secondary schools have shown progress.
Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty's chief inspector, said: "Students are enthusiastic about learning ICT, both in school and at home. Ofsted inspectors saw some great examples of students using modern technology to communicate and present their ideas."
Improving computer training lessons could encourage more young people to seek web design careers when they leave school.
Stephen Kelly, head of Micro Focus, recently called for colleges and universities to expand their computer training curriculums so that businesses have access to employees with wider skill sets.
